Coaching
High-performance coaching for race teams who want to improve how they sail, operate, and perform under pressure.
I work with race teams to improve the complete performance system onboard — from boat handling and starts to communication, decision-making, crew structure, and race execution.
My coaching is built around one simple idea:
Performance improves fastest when the team has clarity.
Clarity in roles.
Clarity in communication.
Clarity in process.
Clarity in what is actually making the boat faster — or slower.
Whether I’m working with an owner-driver team, a developing race crew, or an experienced program looking for sharper execution, the goal is always the same:
Turn learning into repeatable performance.
How I Coach
My coaching is practical, race-relevant, and built around what actually wins races — not theory for theory’s sake.
I focus on helping teams:
Sail the boat better
Handle pressure better
Communicate more clearly
Make cleaner decisions
Improve repeatability in key maneuvers
Build a stronger, more accountable team environment
A lot of performance in sailing is lost in the small things:
the final minute of a start
unclear calls
poor role definition
inefficient maneuvers
hesitation in transitions
teams not fully understanding what “good” looks like
That is where I do most of my work.
I help teams identify those performance leaks and turn them into clear actions, drills, and systems that move the whole group forward.
What I Specialise In
Race Team Performance
I work on the full race team environment — not just boat speed in isolation.
That includes:
team structure
role clarity
onboard communication
preparation
process under pressure
debrief and review systems
Starts & First-Phase Racing
Starts are one of the biggest opportunities in any campaign.
I coach:
line use
setup
timing
trigger pulling
time-on-distance
first-phase positioning
tactical clarity under pressure
Boat Handling & Maneuver Quality
I help teams improve the repeatability and efficiency of:
tacks
gybes
mark roundings
deployment decisions
transitions between modes
exits from maneuvers
The aim is not just to “do it better once” — it’s to make it repeatable in racing.
Onboard Communication
One of the biggest gains in performance often comes from improving how information moves around the boat.
I work with teams on:
who should be talking
what they should be saying
when they should say it
how to reduce noise and improve clarity
Debrief to Action
One of the most important parts of coaching is turning observations into improvement.
I help teams move from:
“what happened”
to“why it happened”
to“what we do next”
That means turning race days into practical next steps — not just more conversation.
Video & Drone Analysis
We use drone footage to capture key moments on the water — particularly maneuvers, transitions, and positioning — from an external perspective.
This gives the team a clear view of what is actually happening, not just what it feels like onboard.
Drone footage is especially valuable for:
gybes and gybe exits
mark roundings
deployment decisions
weight movement and positioning
heel control and balance
timing through maneuvers
It allows us to:
identify small inefficiencies
compare execution between runs
align the team on what “good” looks like
and refine technique much faster
Seeing it clearly makes it easier to improve it.
My Approach
My coaching style is built around:
clarity, accountability, and repeatability.
I’m interested in helping teams become:
more organised
more self-aware
more efficient
more race-ready
more consistent under pressure
The goal is not to over complicate things.
The goal is to make the important things:
clear, trainable, and repeatable.
That is where real performance gains come from.
What Coaching Can Include
Depending on the team and campaign, coaching can include:
On-water coaching
Regatta support
Race debriefs
Team communication work
Starts and maneuver training
Crew role definition
Video / analytics review
Drone analysis
Performance planning for events
Training structure and drill design
Every team is different, so the coaching is always tailored to the program and where the biggest gains are available.
Who I Work With
I work with teams who want to raise their level — whether that means:
improving race execution
sharpening crew performance
integrating new team members
getting more from training days
or building a stronger, more professional campaign
That can apply to:
owner-driver teams
performance keelboats
catamaran programs
one-design teams
regatta-focused crews
teams building toward a bigger campaign
The Outcome
Good coaching should not just make the boat look better for a day.
It should leave the team with:
a clearer structure
better habits
stronger decision-making
better communication
and a more repeatable way of performing
The aim is simple:
Make the team better at performing when it matters.
